Hi Capt Capsize,
I had a '79 Gold Wing for about 6 years. When it was written off in an accident it had done nearly 100,000 miles. I'm sorry, but it never went wrong !! I never had the engine out.
I'd try using gravity to keep the sprocket and chain in position. If you remove the fuel, oil and battery, then lie the bike on its side, the sprocket should stay in the right position. You may have to shine a light through the hole to finely adjust the position of the bike before reassembly.
I've not tried this - it's just the way I'd try to solve the problem!
If this fails, you will have to strip the motor, but you will be no worse off.
I have fond memories of the Wing. Big and wobbly and loads of fun. My friend rode it. He said it's handling was like making love to a very large girl on a water bed. I just had to take his word for that.
Happy Savage riding.
My lovely little slimline motorbike.
